You can even force the Finder to quit, if it stops responding: Select Finder in the Force Quit window, then click Relaunch. (This is similar to pressing Control-Alt-Delete on a PC.) Then select the app in the Force Quit window and click Force Quit. Then, check for updates (for the app first, and for macOS second). Or choose Force Quit from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
